The first Christmas without them.

It tends to catch people in small places: the box of decorations with their stocking in it, the treat you almost bought, the quiet at the door when everyone arrives.

The stocking

You don’t have to decide the minute you find it. Leave it in the box for a day. Some people hang it anyway, some put a note in it, some fold it away for next year. None of those is the wrong one.

Christmas morning

This is often the hard hour, because it’s when they were underfoot. Plan something for it: the usual walk at the usual time, even alone, or presents in a different room, or a call with someone who knew them.

The people around you

Tell them ahead of time. “It’s my first Christmas without Bella. I may be quiet, and I’d like to say her name.” Most people stay silent because they’re afraid of making it worse. One sentence from you takes that away.

What you’d have bought them

You can still buy it. A local shelter will usually be glad of the toy or the treats, and you get to choose them one more time.

If it’s a friend going through it

Say the name. “I know this is your first Christmas without Max. I’ve been thinking about him.” That’s most of it. You don’t have to fix anything.

If you want to give something, give something with the name on it: a framed photo, an ornament, a donation in their name.

Or a song with their name in it.

That’s what we make. Tell us one small thing only they did, and we write an original song from it: $29, by email within 24 hours, with a lyric card you can print and put in a Christmas card. Order by Dec 22 for Christmas. If it doesn’t sound like them, you get every cent back.
